Atlanta Mom Charged With Murder After Leaving Baby Alone In Car For Six Hours While Getting Hair Done

ATLANTA (WGCL) -- Dijanelle Fowler, 25, now faces charges of second degree murder, cruelty to children and concealing a death after she allegedly left her baby alone in a car for six hours while she got her hair done, CBS affiliate WGCL reports.

"I can't imagine leaving my child in a car, or doing it intentionally," DeKalb County resident Teresa Fears said to WGCL. "They're just babies, it's not like they can fend for themselves."

Police said the one-year-old was left outside a salon on June 15, which also happened to be the hottest day of the month.

Captain Jerry Lewis with the DeKalb County Police Department said he had a difficult time working on the case.

"Those cases are tough to work," said Lewis. "Anything involving children is tough to work. The vehicle was running and at some point in time the car cut off, whether due to a mechanical issue or the battery just gave out, and the car cut off and the child was in the car."

Fowler left her hair appointment after spending six hours inside the salon and drove to Emory Hospital and called 911, complaining of her own medical issues. Police arrived and treated her for a seizure. That's when they found her baby deceased in the back seat.

"You have to be intelligent about what you do sometimes," resident Carolyn Jewell said. "If you have a child, you take care of that child first, then you get your hair done."

WGCL reports Fowler is expected to appear in court on August 3.
